Web Host: Big Vs Little- Which Is Business Smart?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I've been researching web host for my small start-up online gift shop. Found PappaShop (which is apparently a small family run hosting company) and others who seem geared towards women starting businesses. I have also researched more well known larger companies. I'm trying to determine if it's best to go with one of the larger ones (i.e. Host Gater, Host Monster, Daddy this, Cow that, etc.) because they are larger and more commercialized? Any suggestions?

P.S. I do know that I have to take into consideration the space, bandwith, up-time, etc. It's the other jargon that's difficult to understand.

OK - in this case - size doesn't matter. You nailed it in your last post - it's what they offer. Many hosting companies are really resellers of other larger reliable hosting services - like GoDaddy.

The concern with large cheap hosting is that they often load up their servers with too many web sites to boost profitability. Sites work but tend can be slower, support is less available. The days of a "hosting company" having a server in an apartment closet in Bolivia is pretty much gone.

In your case - I would say that your e-commerce needs might be small enough that a shared hosting with a reputable company is fine.

Don't spend a lot of time analyzing this because worst-case - you can change hosting in about 24 hours or less.
The differnce between $3.95/month and $7.95/month shouldn't be a problem - if it is your (business) has bigger problems than hosting.

Thanks Bob, that really helped. It also helps to know I can change at anytime.
Pardon my ignorance, but what is "shared host". I'm sure it's something I should be familiar with. I've seen it quite a few times.

Thanks, Karen. I appreciate your response.
I didn't really understand the links, but I'll check them out again later. In the meantime, I have decided to go with either Pappashop or Merchant Mom. The web designer I have chosen works with both. If it doesn't work out, I'll switch. However, I'm aware that it may not be as easy as it sounds.
