Advertising Strategy For A Car Wash Business

Posted by Anonymous on 100 Points
My nephew is starting a car wash business. He asked me to help him on advertising his business. I need some advice on this advertising strategy we have come up with. Putting fliers on the windshields of cars. How would you feel and what would you do if you see a flier on your windshield? Do you think this is a great idea?

The problem with flyers is that many people just throw them on the ground...which is bad advertising for you. You also are probably doing it at a location that will file a complaint for you soliciting on their grounds....unless you get permission.

I take it in the car with me and throw it away later. Of course, if it's an ad for tires and I need tires, I may keep it.

Want to be different? Wash someones windows and lights and have the flyer say "Your windows and lights were washed by ABC. The rest of your car can be washed at 123Main street."

The places I see car wash ads around me are coupons on the back of grocery store receipts and in the ValPak mailings.

Door hangers or cards under windshields could work also.

Overall, you want a local media. Something that gets the info to people who live within a few miles of the car wash location.

This is all assuming he is targeting the general public. Another area you could target is fleet owners (taxis, police, government, limos, etc.). It is a slightly different approach (often a more sales approach rather than marketing) and usually involves a negotiated discount to the customer in exchange for getting lots of car washes done.

You haven't really described the business model your nephew will pursue. Is he an adult? Is he cleaning cars in people's driveways, his own driveway, or in a proper car wash?

Is it a self-service carwash, a fully automated carwash, or or a hand-carwash using a mechanised tunnel? does he employ others? What is his weekly revenue target? How much per car? Does he charge differently for small cars versus larger vehicles?

There's potentially a world of difference in the models at various scales, and we need to know much, much more before we can suggest something that might make sense.

I am an avid car enthusiast and HATE flyers on my car. If you want to gain respect and business from people who are passionate about their cars, start showing up at local car shows and handing out flyers with "show special" coupons.
