How To Match Students With Potential Employers??

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hi there,
I`ve recently been hired as a marketing coordinator at an institute and my responsability is to match recent grads with potential employers. It works like a staffing agency, except I already have the employees I just need to market the school in order to get the clients(employers). Any help with programs or strategies I could use??

Start by determining why your client (employer) would need your services? Why can't they do it themselves using the "traditional way"? What makes your grads better than the usual applicants. Focus on that message, and get to know exactly what employers are looking for....

One starting point is to tap into your alumni. Where are they working? See if there any firms with a large concentration of your alums, and/or any organizations with an alum in an executive position. You can leverage the old "birds of a feather flock together."

Once you identify a friendly firm or two, query the recruiters and hiring managers on how best to work your way into similar firms.

I also agree with Karen's comments above. Most of your counterparts at other area schools will probably be happy to share best practices and war stories if you ask.

    Good luck, MO

    Great advice above.

I agree that your first challenge is to get to know the target audience (employers) and what their challenges are when it comes to staffing. Get out of your office and into theirs, ask a few high-gain questions and let them talk. Listen carefully to their answers, and take detailed notes.

After a dozen of these interviews you will know what they need and what you have to do to deliver. The answers will be in your notes from the interviews.

Hi all, thanks for the great advice. The position requires me to design marketing programs to get our students matched with employers. It is not a sales job, although it might sound like it. The position is new so leading from past experience is not an option for me.
In response to Karen, the job placement is for permanent placement, not temp or an internship. Thanks again for the responses, there are quite a lot of great ideas to begin with. If anything else comes to mind, please do let me know.
    Thanks!!
    Karina
