Motivating Employees

Looking for some good ideas for employee motivators. We use a lot of gift card for our in-house phone support teams as rewards for reaching sales goals. Any other ideas that have worked for you?

    Cards and the like are fine short-term motivators. Is that the environment you're dealing with - or are you looking for long-term motivators (for example, doing better because "it's the right thing")? The problem with short-term motivators is that their utility as a motivation decreases over time, unless you ramp up the "specialness" of it, but it's a losing battle.

    Some additional "prizes" I've seen work are:

    - movie tickets
    - fancy dinner (tell the person they can spend up to $200 on dinner reimbursable by the company)
    - the CEO (or another senior executive) will wash your car (not take it to a place, the executive will wash it in front of the company)
    - tell them they can leave work early (like at 3pm instead of staying until 5:30pm)

    I recommend you read the book "Drive: the surprising truth about what motivates us", might give you other ideas.
