Are Your Web Staff Housed In It? Marketing? Other?

Do your web staff report up through IT or marketing? Or another area/department? What's the rationale for the reporting relationships?

    What's the purpose of your website? If it's a marketing/advertising vehicle, then it should report through marketing. If it's the way you deliver your product/service, then it probably belongs in operations.

    I can't see much reason to ever have it in IT. The website is usually not a way of providing technology support services to the company, is it? Isn't the role of IT to provide information technology support to the enterprise?

    Of course, you may want a member of the IT staff to be on the website team, but certainly not to manage the whole website.
