Making Money On A Large Event

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Hi, and thanks for your help in advance. We are looking at working with an event organiser who has a three day event, 250,000 people, 1000 exhibitors in the one place. We are tasked with building a website and promoting using social media, emails, SEO etc. This we can do
We also wish to bring the event into the digital age by using social media and other digital media. to date it has been a very basic site and traditional advertising.
My challenge is that their digital budget is tiny so I said I would do it for free in return for commercial opportunities. Ideas to date include, advertising on the site, emails, facebook competitions, member forum with sponsorship, guest blogs (paid), sell tickets online, sell merchandise online, use QR codes at each stand and then I draw a blank.
So your assistance would be appreciated on ideas to generate income and maybe some examples that you may be aware of.

First, I would be concerned working with an organizer that big on an event that big that has no money for digital advertising.

Second, you might want to try and convince them that online/digital advertising would likely give a better ROI than conventional ads and that they need to transfer more money from the conventional to digital budget. While it’s subject to demographics of audiences etc….almost everybody is online so it almost always generates better bang for the buck.

If they refuse, then your ideas are a good start to monetize the situation. Here are others: Google ads. Affiliate ads (CJ, etc). Get a free booth to sell your own products and/or services. Get 2-3 free booths that you can resell to business you know. You get to hang your business banners, get free ads in the show brochure, etc. Capture and use the email addresses for future marketing of your own business. Or sell the list or parts of the list back to exhibitors as “hot show leads”. Approach each exhibitor to see if they want to be highlighted on the website for a small upsell fee – offer a few different options. Use the web traffic, email captures, Social media captures, etc to market your own business more to generate more revenue in a “longtail” format. As part of the deal, you keep all web content, rights, copyrights etc….then sell your services and/or the website to other show organizers.
