Kids At The Supermarket

Is it an advantage for us who runs a supermarket to really make parents bring their kids to shop? i was told by a friend that when kids are present with their parents at the grocery, they somehow find it difficult to refuse when a kid wants this and that...do you know any data which proves her right? or maybe she was wrong...

because if this is really effective then it create an impulse buying situation which is beneficial for the supermarket....

    Oh yes! Why do you think some grocers put in kid size carts? When my ex takes the grandkids, they each take their own cart and add to it. Wild Oats (now Whole foods) had a flag over the kid cart (which was really a safety feature) stating "future shopper". Grocers have added animal themed carts.

    Make a family friendly store-- you don't "make" parents bring the kids-- but you can certainly make it friendly and they will.

    I have read research reports indicating that parents who bring kids with them to the supermarket spend more per visit on groceries than those who do not. I'm not sure if that's a causal relationship or not, but it certainly suggests that being "kid-friendly" can't hurt.

    What would you do differently if we could actually come up with hard data (and specific research) rather than just opinions and anecdotal evidence?

    Walk through any grocery store's cereal section and count the number of kid-friendly packages that are placed at kid's eye level. There's your research.

    If I go to a store that regularly has whiny kids (and I love kids) whose parents cant control them...I'm shopping elsewhere.

    So...what's my value vs the value of the kids? Depends on your product line.
