A Better Name For "+1" On Google+

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I think the +1 moniker is doomed to fail. It's very natural to "like" a page or some content, but "plus oneing" it doesn't sound right. It's not a verb, it's hard to say/describe and Google is already trying to settle arguments about grammatical usage and use of apostrophes. Is it +1'ing?

Do you think it would make more sense to drop the "1" and just focus on the + instead? Just click the plus button. Plus our page. We have 2,000 pluses.

+1 may look cool onscreen, but if it's too hard to say, write and refer to, then I think it will hurt adoption.

Thoughts?

My prediction is that Google+1 will succeed or fail based on its functional appeal, not on the name. The parent name ("Google") is strong enough to offset any possible problems with the line extension modifier.

Besides, there are fewer syllables in "Plus One" than there are in "Favorite" or "Recommend."

Despite the possible drawbacks you cite, I don't see the name as being a major factor in determining the success or failure of Google+1.

What you think about a Google product or service is, sadly for you, irrelevant. What I think about Google won't keep the heads of the company awake at night either. It's not what the service is called that matters, it's how you'll use it.
