Why not specialize in something unusual for your area - perhaps rental bridal dresses, or dresses for women who are hard-to-fit (large, tall, short, etc.), or very inexpensive dresses, etc.? Rather than focusing on the promotion, focus on a under-served niche of brides-to-be.

Why are you opening a bridal shop? That might help answer your promotion question. Is it for the location? Is it for the designer dresses? Is it the one-stop shop for the occasion?

Karyn - How is your shop better/different from your competition? How is it worse?

If your environment is better, then offer free appointments for (qualified) brides-to-be, with catered finger foods (to highlight your environment). Perhaps co-market with local caterers who might be interested in catering the wedding itself - creating a nice win-win opportunity for everyone.

Thanks Jay, that sounds good. Perhaps with a drink or two just as an introduction so people are aware. You are a star, thank you very much.

Bridal is much different than most every other industry.
You said that you are introducing "Rental Gowns." that is a facet of the industry that has had many stumbles along the way but with the changing climate in the industry might be viable today.

Along the lines of what others have said, you need to get brides into your shop to see that they gowns you offer are top quality and not beat to death. That Is the number one stigma you will have to over come.

Towards that goal, I would start staging a series of trunk shows or showcases for the accessory lines you carry. Market these heavily and don't mention the gowns, except in passing. Get them in the shop and then they will"discover" the gowns.

There are many different ideas for promoting bridal salons on my site, Think Like A Bride.
