Usp For Improv Theater

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Hi:
We have an improv theater group and we're trying to improve our marketing efforts.

We've used these taglines :

Oakland's Improv Theater
Where Neurons Fire Faster
Laugh out loud fun

First part of the question is should each of our offerings have a USP?

We offer:

Basic Improv Classes

Performance Training

Drop in classes

House teams (perform on regular basis)

and shows.

We're in Oakland rather than in San Francisco and have a strong name in the East Bay.

We've been doing our thing since February of 2002.

Any suggestions on resources, USP approaches or related appreciated.

Randall's given you some great advice. Also, who are you wanting to attract - people in the East Bay or the whole Bay Area? BATS has as their tagline "The Bay Area's Leading Center for Improvisational Theatre" (a bit long) - perhaps you can piggyback on this as "The East Bay's Home For Improvisational Fun"?

It seems to me that the shows you do would be the best route for promoting the classes, training, and teams. So the two steps I would do are:

    1) make sure that appropriate information is given out to all show attendees about the classes, etc. Not overload people, but make sure they are informed. And also make sure they understand that it is something anyone can do (you don't need special skills or to be a pro).

    2) work to increase attendance to the shows. This is a more traditional promotion process, as used by other theaters.

No need to try to compete with BATS, but I would instead focus on the East Bay.
