How Does My Marketing Resume Look? Feedback Apprec

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Thanks for taking a look at my resume. I'm currently under-going a very hectic job search for a management position in marketing. If you would take a look and give me feedback about my resume and how I could improve it, or what positions sound right with my experience level I would really appreciate it. Right now my resume is 2 full pages. The format may be off due to pasting so please overlook that. Thank you.

My opinion: Your resume has too much information and is not specific to the job you want. Rather than trying to capture everything you've ever done on a 2-page resume, why not identify the job you want (and the company for which you want to work) and craft a resume that demonstrates how perfect you are to address their most important unmet need.

Targeted resumes like that are much more effective than a generic "dump" of everything you've ever done. And creating a targeted resume will force YOU to do your homework and really come to grips with what job you want, what value you bring to an employer, and why you're the right person for the job.

This philosophy is at the core of the book The Potato Chip Difference. (https://bit.ly/9Zq3jh) The subtitle of the book is How to apply leading edge marketing strategies to landing the job you want

In marketing, we always try to begin by understanding the needs of our target audience, right? Well, you need to identify your target audience very specifically, and then identify the need that you're uniquely able to address. Once you've done that, then it's just a matter of communicating what you've discovered to the right person.

Note: The Potato Chip Difference is available through major booksellers in the United States, online (e.g., Amazon.com, BN.com, etc.), and through the publisher (https://bit.ly/9Zq3jh). When you order from the publisher, you also receive a free booklet titled, "10 Stupid Things Job Seekers Do That Guarantee They'll Be Looking For Work Again Soon."

Your resume has a lot of duties listed (terms like "managed", "developed", etc.), but not a lot of listing out results. You need more of things like your "Drove over 20% increase in territory sales in each location" (and that one statement was kind of buried).

I personally don't read core competencies, but skip right to the experience section. I will often scan the first statement (what you call profile) to see a summary of how long you have worked in the field. The team management listed there was useful or me, but the "4 years of marketing management" caught my eye as a negative for me, as it seems like less time than what is shown in the jobs section at first glance (so made me look a second time at the jobs you have done).

Thanks for all the great feedback so far!! Really appreciate your time spent reading it. I made a second iteration of my resume and incorporated a lot of your feedback. Is it better now and am I on the right track? Any other changes I should make. Thank you.
