Interview Question - Reviewing A Website

Posted by rum68br on 500 Points
Hello everyone,

I am currently looking for a new job and have been lucky enough to get interviews for some big companies. The question that keeps cropping up is to offer feedback on their website. Now obviously every website could be improved in terms of SEO etc, but how can I give constructive critic when I do not have any data to go on?

Any Ideas?

Hi, This is something I prepare for whether the interviewer asks me or not. The trick is in giving them information just enough to impress them but not provide actual solutions during the interview. For eg. if you feel the messaging in a section or even the layout of a particular page or even if you spot a spelling mistake (this one I find often!!) point out the importance of being focused, customer-friendly or observant as the case may be. Depending on the level & position that you are applying for, you need to be able to relate to using the website effectively & efficiently. Give them a few pointers and that should help convince them that you're serious enough to have studied their website even before joining their organization. All the best! Jane

You could also offer the process you go through, starting with their goals, their traffic, their customer comments, their competition, their future needs, and then seeing where the site falls short (including browser/mobile testing, speed of loading, localization, etc.). This will give you an opportunity to tell some stories of companies you have helped to make a difference, explaining specifics as it applied to them.
