How To Propose A Marketing Plan

Posted by broadhurst.jason on 250 Points
Hello marketing experts,

I've recently set out as a freelance marketer, and one of my first potential clients is a very new venture.

The company has approached me to produce a marketing plan for it. Although I have a pretty good idea what should be in a marketing plan, I'm struggling with how to propose and price it.

My belief is that the company has set up without a very clear idea of what it is going to do, and how it is going to do it. I know it is part of my job to define this, but without the owners having a very clear sense of where they're going, I worry that working through all the questions and variables will take time... and I can't really estimate that time.

Any ideas on how to approach drafting a proposal, and pricing it?

Many thanks!

I agree with fixed price. But, its not going to be a random number. You have to know what the market will bear, what price point will get you the job and what number will scare the client away and what number is too low.

You can talk about why they are in business, but the real value is where they should be in the business. I always start with a SWOT. Starting here, it doesn't matter the biz, you can get a handle on things and build from there.

Its going to be a lot of front end work, but how good you do this will determine if you get to 2nd base. And, of course how well you convince the client this is necessary at all. After all, they've come this far without it.
