Presenting Unsoliticted Social Media Ideas

Posted by terri on 250 Points
My client has requested that we bring more ideas to the table regarding social media. However, they really refuse to give us much information about their goals, budgets, objectives, etc. It seems like trying to shoot at a moving target. But yet, they are really asking us to step it up. Any suggestions?

It might be the case that they don't know the terrain well. So, perhaps help them to understand what their competition is doing, its effectiveness, cost, frequency, etc. To compare/contrast, also show some top-notch social media campaigns (that cost a lot of $) to give them an idea of the unseen costs to deliver top looks.

I was getting a similar feel based on your description to what Jay was saying. This could be an opportunity - they could be open to added services from you if you can give them a feel for costs and benefits for added services from you.

The text to image ratio is just one factor used when determining spam. The examples you provided may see a slightly higher flagged as spam rate, but because it is come from a white listed email, doesn't use domains that are considered questionable, doesn't have flagged words, etc., many still get through. Perhaps a few more would get through if they used less images, but then it would have a different look and feel which may reduce their effectiveness.

Oops - accidentally responded to the wrong message here. had multiple windows open. The text to image ration was meant as an answer for another question. Sorry about that.

I strongly agree with Jay that you should research, social media activities of their competitors.

If it were me, I would also look at this as a red flag with my client, and I would step up my prospecting efforts for new clients.

Odds are they can't say what their goals are because their real goal is to do that cool new thing everyone else is doing. It sounds like they really want you to give them reasons to use social media, ultimately selling them their own idea but adding the logic they can't find.

I agree with presenting what their competition is doing, but also presenting the probable reasons why they are doing what they do. That would include explaining the potential of different social media channels for possible outcomes.

I'd suggest presenting a chart showing different marketing goals and which social media channels are appropriate; goals might be engaging customers, monitoring their reputation in the marketplace, branding themselves as experts, getting sales leads, providing a customer service channel, etc.

Depending on what other work you've done for this client, you probably have a sense of their overall marketing goals. If you give them some social media ideas that can support those goals, and if you believe social media has value, you should be able to find a way to work for them.
