Changing The Name Of A Methodology

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Hello,

I designed a methodology to speed up the implementation of our software and put the client in a great comfort zone.
It seems strange, but in our space implementation can last up to 2 years and having only 40 % of the software implemented.
It is the same as SAP.

I called the approach “Calypso Golden Gate”.

It is a big hit among our clients and Professional Services team. It put us far ahead of competition.

This approach covers a pre-configured database, documentation, training and specific support. It allows client to be on production in 3-4 months period, with a complete control of the project risk.

Unfortunately a software company in the bay area used the name GoldenGate so I need to change the name.

Our logo is a sail boat. www.calypso.com

I am looking for an aggressive name that gives the feeling a quick success , quick revenue generation…

I need it (as usual) as soon as possible, i.e. I cannot afford to put a task force to come up with a name. I am reviewing all collaterals and this is a major price in these collaterals.

Do you think you can help me here?

Thanks

Wasn't sure if you're trying to replace "Calypso Golden Gate" or just the "Golden Gate" portion.

These are powerful words that could stand on their own. Even if you're using Calypso in front of the name, that would work, too:

    Velocity
    Momentum
    PowerHouse
    Achieve
    Activate
    Triumph
    Pinnacle
    Impetus
    Propeller
    Propel

    Good luck to you!

    Dear Gerard

We’ve spoken before or emailed, so hello again.

Having GoldenGate Software to contend with (Data warehousing solutions?) is a bit of a problem as they have spent a fortune optimising their name – even to the extent that it comes up on the first page of most searches for “Golden Gate”, way ahead of the bridge. Thankfully, your brand equity in the Golden Gate tag doesn’t appear to be too strong as yet. With a ratio of 500:1 for mentions for Calypso Banking Software and the same including Golden Gate you don’t appear to be in too much trouble ditching the name and re-educating those who already know the Golden Gate name as associated with your product rather than data warehousing. Sooo--- The effects in the marketplace of changing your name to anything under the sun appear to be manageable and negligible, so don’t fret too much over it.

Don’t fret over a major name change involving significant marketing collateral? Am I mad? No, I’m basing my advice that when under pressure, the mind makes better intuitive choices than it does reasoned ones, (Recent paper in Nature, sorry I don’t have the reference to hand) so give yourself a chance to relax your thoughts and the right answer will most likely come.

It puzzles me why you want to go for an “Aggressive” sounding name. Everyone in banking finance is “Aggressive” Sub prime mortgage sellers were “Aggressive” (For which thanks from over here in the UK where we had our first run on a bank in 154 years!) So surely differentiation in your area and for your brand would be to go against the flow. Or somehow combine it with a sharp sounding name which is not at all likely to slice your fingers off – like the Razr mobile phone, which my daughter is pestering me for.

If Golden Gate worked for your clients and your feedback from them was good, then surely more of the same is called for. It’s only being canned because you’ll get your pants sued off! Marcus’ idea of sticking with GG as a set of initials strikes me as good – you minimise the pain of transition whilst finding a suitable alternative with the same initials.

    Cradle to grave: “Guardian Gate”

Or are you required to move away from all associations with Golden and Gate to satisfy the fat basta----- oops! Lawyers? “Growth Generator” sticks with what it does, but if you decide to move away from the GG angle, then why not say how it works for clients rather than what it eventually does. The last name conveyed neither, but Rapid Deployment seems to be a key USP and as the USA likes to mangle words so as to copyright them “Fast-Trax”. Make a good tag line as well, “Calypso Fast-Trax financial solutions – delivered in real time”

Nice to hear from you again and good luck with this tricky dilemma.

    How about Calypso Bridge?

    Calypso Cruise
    Calypso Breeze
    Calypso Runner

I like Golden Horn as well. You don't say what your product naming convention is, and don't have one on the site, but what if you named the product after various bodies of water that are engineering feats of excellence? Erie, Panama, etc.

Just thought of another theme. You could name your products after various types of racing sailboats

    Catamaran
    Spinnaker
    420

    some excellent names here

    Calypso Cat
    Calypsail
Calypso Connect (already mentioned, but I like it)
    Gold Standard
    Golden Bridge
    Hidden Gold

How about Calypso Clipper? The word "clipper" suggests speed. Clipper ships were built to smoothly cut through waves and choppy water. This word fits with your service and your brand. And the alliteration makes it fun to say.

    Hi Gerard,
I was taken by your site. Even though you've probably chosen and moved I felt that I have to put these forward to you based on what I saw there . . . it's the underlying message in what you do.

    Calypso Smooth

    Calypso Breathrough

    Dear Gerard

Thanks for the points and for your comments.

You weren’t to know this, but this is the first time I’ve ever come up with an idea for a product name. Tag-Lines and Naming are not my skills at all; you see they don’t have any equations in them!!!

Good luck with the re-branding and do stay in contact. There are a lot of areas in selling complex software where I would value the opportunity to have the odd private discussion.

If I can be of assistance with anything, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is in my Bio.

    Sincerely
