Buying Criteria For Denim Merchandisers

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
What are the key buying criterias for a denim buyer of a department store and a high end boutique chain? In other words, what makes a buyer choose one denim brand over another?

Do buyers normally have buying restrictions placed upon them by the department store/boutique or they usually have a free reign in their buying choices?

    Hi gennie -

Buyers shopping at department stores are probably more price sensitive than boutique shoppers and overall are likely to be less brand loyal. Factors influencing brand decisions may include brand image, price, fit, durability, promotions, word-of-mouth marketing and valued opinions of those close to the consumer.

Buyers are restricted usually by the brands carried, although this is somewhat dependent on the buyer. For example, convenience may be a major factor to a buyer, so if the dept. store or boutique is close by, in this case the buyer is restricted by availability. Similarly, price sensitive buyers are more restricted than others. Of course, buyers can have some influence by communicating with the retailer about their preferences, but only if these factors have less importance in their purchasing decision.

    Hope that helps,
    Joy

I can't help you with your answer; I'm interested in similar information myself. However, I will say that I don't understand the confusion over your question! It seemed pretty straight-forward to me!

Gennie - the good thing is: our product lines really don't compete. Mine is in the t-shirt, sweatshirt, boxers, caps market for 13 to 18 year olds. But responses to your questions could help me understand what criteria boutique store buyers' go by (store buyers - not consumers! for all those confused out there).
