Blogging - What's The Big Deal?

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I would love to get feed back from others as to why it seems blogging has become such a hot topic.

What measurable benefits can/do come from producing a blog?

It appears to be a significant amount of work, and I just cannot seem to see its benefits?

"Help me see the light"

Thanks,
Kern

    Kern,

As it relates to search engine marketing, the more popular blog sites may be indexed faster then your site might. Thus, creating a blog which focuses on the topics and phrases that would align with your web site targeted phrases may drive traffic to your site, if you use Blogs correctly.

There are other reasons for using blogs, but since this is a Search Engine Marketing exchange I will leave it at that.

    Good Hunting,

I've been blogging for a few years. Sometimes I blog in this forum (replies), sometimes in the Fabricare Forum, or on my own web sites. Once in a while, I'll comment on other's blogs. Why do I do it? Because I can, and because it gets my opinions and viewpoints out there. Read me or not, agree with me or not, no matter...as long as it furthers the debate, or broadens the discussion, and maybe even answeres a question or two. The whole reason to blog is to share viewpoints and ideas, the benifit is, other tend to get to know who you are, as a person, as an individual, and where your mind is at. Thet last sentance is really a spin off, but it seems to be what is driving the blogosphere today....forming communities around common opinions (or not).

    Hi!

Search engine hits is definitely the prime reasoning. But there is a strong secondary reason which is positioning. If a company blog is done right it can raise your profile in many ways and position you as a thought leader. But in order to be that thought leader your blog needs have substance and you must be willing to share your opinion while not riding the fence on an issue.

Essentially it is another tool that is cheap to create buzz. You can get noticed by editors, analysts, partners, other industry leaders, etc. And these can lead to invitation to speaking opportunities, etc. which all these are to enhance you sales!

I have discussed blogging with a few companies and there are a few steadfast rules with corporate blogging that you need to be prepared for.

    1. Be relevant (I don't care what you think of rainy Sundays as a CEO of a software company)
    2. Have a solid opinion and be prepared for opposing views and comments for the world to see
    3. Be dedicated and consistent (once a week will not cut it to make a good impact)
    4. Do not be outwardly self serving and pitchy

The next step in the bog wars that will become common - video blogging.

    T.
