Ideas With No Where To Go

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I have "created" my own clothing since I was around 8 (not including my garbage bag dress I was so utterly proud of at 6).. I have unlimited ideas and have seen a LOT of my ideas on the market years after I have sketched them out. As I see the 80's fashions growing with all of our generations, I compiled some AMAZING ideas and lines to "bring back"... yet I have nowhere to go with the ideas. I don't want to do all this work and get nothing out of it... but I also don't have the know how to start my own line... how do I get an already formed "higher end" corporation/ clothing line to take on my ideas??

Thanks in Advance

Well- develop your own portfolio. And/ or Build a website( projects a professional image). Then go about prospecting/asking appointments among your chosen corporation(s). If you want a job with them vs freelancing with them- prepare your price per sketch accordingly. Most high end retail stores in turn outsource their designing to freelancers- Do you want to be one of them? They will have very standard vendor development policies- understand them and take off!
    All the best.

If you do the designs, just hire the tailor or the maker of the clothes? Tell them how the designs and style must be done, they are expert in sewing, bet ya!
Then, have connection with the owners of boutique/ department stores and give them samples of your products and have a small place near your production area where you think is a good spot to market your product. i think it will work. ;-)

First you need to immerse yourself in the fashion business. Start learning everything you can about the business, how it works etc. Did you go to school for fashion design?

Second choose a lifestyle to design for; youth, trendy, soccer moms, men or women.

Then design what you feel are the best you can do.

Look to the various tradeshows that service your targets styles. That might be Magic, Trafik or one of the other great shows. Find a way to take space at these shows to sell to boutiques. You can try online but most boutique owners will not buy unseen.

If you can not do these things then start by doing small runs of clothing that you place in consignment with your local boutiques? See what happens. Whatever you do will take a lot of work and commitment.

You could also try to get an intern job with a local designer to learn the ropes.

BY the way, I hear trash bag dresses are coming back (:-)

I recently attended a lecture by the editor of Vogue and his top suggestion was PR. Find a way to get any type of local magazine newspaper etc to do a story on you and your line.
Additionally, there appear to be numerous groups that come together to help models, and fashion designers join together to promote their work and skills. you can find such groups on the website meetup.com
Also, a good way to get PR is to donate one of your designs to a local charity event (an upscale one) or if there is a charitable fashion show in your area offer to contribute some of your fashion for the show.
    Best of luck

Fashion is some of the toughest nuts to crack. And they are pretty gay about it!!!

No hard and fast rules. hard work and lots o luck....And in between some smart work...PR

Start hitting out this season with your local boutique asking them to either store or design your sketches...Add your reaching out to regional fashion houses...finish it with KNOWN, well known houses. It is the best way to approach it...meanwhile acquire proper skills, jargons and industry knowledge so that you can talk the talk when you reach the desk.

Strat becoming a local design prophet for fashion schools, talk to them in rustiuc fashion sesnses and gut feel fashion trend forecasting.

Keep your fingers crossed, let your legs walk, let your mind run.
