Re-launching In A Tough Economic Climate

What strategy could be used to re-launch a mature consumer brand in a challenging economic climate where consumers are more interested in immediate gratification than emotional connections and internal benefits (the "show me the money" syndrome)? Consumers are generally disillusioned with government and the coperate world and are just so busy trying to make ends meet. The brand being relaunched is premium in its positioning although identifying with the masses.
