What Are The Best Sources To Gather Competitive Market Research For A Start-up Business?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi! I work for a non profit business development center in San Francisco. One area we're constantly struggling with is helping our clients with market research. Could you recommend which sites or organizations can provide relevant competitor information that could be of help to a start-up? Nielsens was a great source of info in Canada...could you suggest similar sources in the U.S.A.? Also, how can one analyze a census (population demographics) to identify a target market? We feel overwhelmed by information thats out there that we know is very relevant to new businesses, but we don't know exactly how to use it/interpret it to our advantage. Thanks!

This is a very broad quesation, as it varies by industry. Most tech indiustries have industry analysts (companies like Gartner group, IDC, etc.) that do this sort of stuff. They publish some data for free on their web sites or in articles, and sell their more detailed reports.

Periodical databases are important. I have searched various databases of periodicals for data related to companies I work for. Most of these databases cost money to access - I happen to get through a part time gig I do as a professor for University of Phoenix.
