Branding Of A New Program

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
The University of North Florida is interested in developing a community based learning program. We need a brand name(title) that would be an easy identifier to the university and the community in which we live. Also one that would identify community based learning with a pithy title.

For example one university wanted to implement technology into all of their curriculums, their program was titled "The Digital Divide"

Any thoughts?

It might help if we knew more about the community and how they might use your service. But, I did work on a program like this in which three universities and a major corporation offered courses in convenient locations around the community. In that case many of the courses were offered in the corporations facilities that had been sitting idle in the evening. If you want to know more about that program you can email me.

If this is about offering convenient learning then something about convenience should be in the title.
If this is about life-long or continuing learning for adults in the community then you want words appropriate to those subjects.

I must admit that I have many thoughts about the whole thing, but to hear them all you'll have to attend my branding class at the University of Chicago...
First of all, define what you call "brand name" or "title".
My gut feeling is that you mean a tag line.
Its hard to have a name that also identify community based learning etc.
You are asking for too much in a name, and on top of it, you are not asking for something that will differentiate you from any other institute offering the same thing.
The example you gave is demonstrating exactly what I'm talking about.
"The Digital Divide" sounds like a commodity, a generic name, with no differentiation or any resonance, just words...
What do you stand for? what makes you unique? why would anyone prefer you on other schools?
Give me that answer and I'll help to brand you.

I looked up UNF's community-based learning program and found this statement:

The University of North Florida is an urban comprehensive university located in Jacksonville
Florida, a city of over one million residents. As a fast growing urban metropolitan area,
Jacksonville faces a range of challenges and problems that would benefit from the civic
involvement and service participation of UNF students. More specifically, there are educational,
health-related, youth, environmental and social welfare agencies and organizations that serve the
Jacksonville population. Student placement in these organizations through service and
experiential learning would strengthen the bond between the community and the university.

Students can also derive direct benefits from this arrangement as these community opportunities
allow students to develop and apply their academic skills in public and private-sector
organizations, and contribute their intellectual capital. Such internship and field experience
opportunities will enhance the career development and employability of UNF graduates. What is
needed, and what the Center will provide, is a one-stop clearinghouse for community agencies,
organizations and firms to submit and list existing positions, and for students to access
opportunities relevant to their areas of study and career aspirations.

Finally, the current mission statement and branding commitment of the University of North
Florida places a central emphasis on student experiences that are “transformational” in the sense
that they represent intensive, or co-curricular, forms of academic involvement and engagement.

So the program, based in Jacksonville, FL, attempts to place students with local agencies that try to help the community. Here are some ideas:

    Hire Learning
    Student Outreach Services (SOS)
    Lateral Learning
    Community Campus
    Community Curriculum
    Immersion
