Naming Convention Challenge For Asp

Posted by KLKennelly on 250 Points
I have a challenge. Let's say I work for a company that is an ASP (application service provider) that catches credit card fraud.

Let's say the current product is called Credit Guard. Our sales team desperately wants a "new version" of the product to create sizzle with old prospects and to win back accounts. The argument is that "pyshcologically -customers want the newest version of anything." My understanding is most ASP's do NOT have versions - but the SVP of Sales is pushing me to come up with something.

The problem is both of our competitors - also ASP's - have already gone to the market with "2.0" versions of their products. We will look like we're following their lead should we go with the most obvious and simple naming convention of 2.0.

I'm considering the following "version" ideas:
Credit Guard II (followed by III, IV, etc.)
Credit Guard 200 Series (followed by 300, 400, etc.)
Credit Guard Mega (to be followed by Giga, Tera?)
Credit Guard 09 (or 2009)
From what I've read - if you must go with "versioning" it's best to stick with "simple" versus trying to get too cute. I thought about going with names of famous detectives (Sherlock) but I can't think of anyone beyond Sherlock.
Would love to find a more creative approach. Anyone have any ideas?

    Fun thread!

How about guard dogs - Rottweiler, Shepard, Bull Dog, Pit Bull, Great Pyrenees, etc. Kind of a take-off on Apple with Jaguar, Leopard, etc.

Other detective-types - Poirot, Colombo, Matlock, Dirk Pitt, Perry Mason, etc. You might have some challenges with the getting rights to use these.

Nothing wrong with continually improving your product and providing upgrades.

    Good Luck!
