Naming A Business

Posted by melissa.paulik on 250 Points
I am starting up my own consulting company. I know the domain name I would like is available. What else do I need to do in order to make sure I'm not infringing on any other ownership of the name?

    Steve,

I'm not so worried about the domain name. I will buy that and hold it until I come to a final decision on the name. Even if I don't use it, there's no harm in holding it until I am sure.

I'm more concerned about a business with the same name existing in the offline world. Of course, since my expertise is marketing and channel strategies, what company of any merit would not already be online? Perhaps the fact that the domain name is still available tells me everything I need to know.

The only other avenue you have is to check with an attorney if the name has been trademarked, registered or claimed by anyone.

I suggest directincorporation.com. They will do a free trademark search for you, and answer any other questions you have, as well as file the necessary papers (for a fee) should you decide to trademark the name yourself.

phil gave you some good input.

    It's actually

    https://www.uspto.gov

I've used this site many times ... it's pretty straight forward (most lawyers just use this site and charge you much more). Also, pay attention to the categories you select for your business and consider the future of your brand.

In addition to the url, just google the name. if you have competition online or offline it would likely show up.

    good luck
