I'm Trying To Create Leverage...

Posted by Anonymous on 75 Points
Hey guys,

Alright, so I got some great headline advice for these flyers I'm about to distribute to garner some inquiries (which will lead to appointments/ sales) for my magazine. Now I'm a guy that believes in using all the possible leverage in marketing that I can, so my question to you guys is what is the best method of motivating the business owners that view my flyers to pass the word on to their colleagues whether or not they call me for an appointment themselves? I mean, what incentive (spelled out on the flyer) would be considered the sweetest for them to spread the word, thereby creating 'word of mouth' buzz? Like I say, I'm all about the leverage!

How about a "buddy" promo where they can both get a discount?

    Hey Deffy,

If you could, go a little deeper into that. That's interesting, but I'm not entirely sure the intricate details of how MLM works. I just have a surface knowledge of it. Thanks.

Also, I really like that buddy program, Carol. If you could, give me a deeper plug on that as well. Thanks.

First, building and tracking a system where "whoever gives the information to the final client that gets across to you" would be a nightmare. What if two clients claim that referral?

As far as the "buddy" system. Think of health clubs who often run promos as this. Two sign up together and get benefit of discounted rates for both.

I had a client I coached who ran a magazine. We'd create the pairing in some cases-- say a chiropractor with a massage therapist or nutritionist. Sometimes you have to spoon feed things.

I'm not sure what the content is of your magazine but if in your flyer you asked business owners to contribute articles, and/or if in the issue about to be distributed you had an interview or feature of one of your targeted readers business, this would go a long way in creating buzz. Everyone likes seeing their name in print and would most likely share or tell people where to pick up copies.

let me get this striaght, you are trying to gain business for your magazine as in advertisments, articles, readers, all of the above? the only way that i see if MLM would work for you is if you provide some sort of incentive for the distributors of that periodical. as is this, if your magazine is circulated at coffee shops, throw in some sort of advertisement for coffee shops that meet a target number of sales for your product. lets say for the sake of argument that you think coffee inc can sell 25 copies of your magazine a week, if they reach their 100 magazine by the time of release for the next issue, then they will get a free ad on one of the pages.

    how does that sound?

Phil, you are ROUGH, buddy... but I'm starting to dig that cut and dry charm, my man. You have a point, but I have to disagree with your mindset on this.

The entire way that Noni Juice, Quixtar, Mary Kay and a bunch of other companies work is through providing a delicious incentive to folks that get other folks interested enough to sign up under them. It's been an uber-successful model forever.

I'm looking for the same thing, but with this question, I'm asking for ideas on the incentive.

    Carol...
I like you and I like the way you think, ma'am. That is a wonderful idea and I think I'll give that a go soon. Did that work for your client? And how successful was it?

That would be a great idea, jude... but the only thing is that my mag is free to the public. We don't have an ISBN # because we don't have a newsstand value, boss.

But man, thank you and keep that in mind for a suggestion to a paid publication. That really is a good idea. You have me thinking though, about the next question I'll pose, but I'll put that in another posting of its own.

of course it worked-- or I wouldn't post it. In fact, it gives one of the reasons a good mail piece must have-- a compelling reason to respond

    Ok, you guys,

Thanks for everyone's answers. They were all helpful. I really appreciate it, but I'm gonna close this one out and ask another one. Thanks again, and Carol... I didn't mean to be insulting by asking if it worked... I actually wanted to word it more like how successful was it for your client. I know you're good at what you do. It shows in your answers.
