Human Visitors Versus Spiders

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
We have the website https://www.flannelsfashion.com and we are into selling designer clothing online. At our home page we have an image ad, which is meant to woo human visitors. But there is a concern that adding image in the homepage would affect the website as there are no content in the page. Can anyone suggest some measures to attract SE spiders without removing the image ad, which we believe is attracting customers to the website. Thanks in advance.

The problem is your sale graphic is a CSS background image, which can't have alt-text. Move the graphic from CSS to your html, specify the graphic directly and appropriate alt text (for example, "Our sale is going on now").

"without removing the image ad, which we believe is attracting customers to the website."

With what data are you making this assertion? After viewing the page I can't determine the mission of the site. Secondly, the page load is very slow on my 22 megabit connection. This will harm your conversion rate and increase your Adwords click cost. A page should be less than 90 or 100K. Your image alone is 348K.

Finally, search engines are text readers. With no text on your home page you will pay a price.

My recommendation would be to eliminate the image, add some products to the home page and add a value proposition so that your visitors can quickly understand what you do.

    I hope this helps.

I agree with you that the image is attractive, but maybe you could combine the text for the spider with the image.
For example you leave the image as a background and instead of the “sale, sale sale “ words as image you can use a simple phrase " On Sale NOW" and then list the categories or products you are offering on sale in your site.
The customers will give more value to the information than to the design.

Images can't bring visitors to a web site :) They would have to first arrive at the site in order to see the image (except maybe with Cuil).

Good key words and content bring visitors to a web site.

Once visitors arrive then the image may have an impact on your bounce rate. Are they clicking and getting into the products with this image more than with last months image for instance?

There is plenty of info online (free) and plenty of professionals who can help you to optimise your site for SEO. Bringing traffic is ultimately the main goal. The more traffic you have the more chance you have to make a sale.

Of course once you get traffic onto your landing page - then you need to give them a compelling reason to go deeper - There is no real magic in it it is pure math and hard work.

Don't forget to do plenty of multivariate testing with different versions to compare click rates and conversions.

Create different special landing pages for different products or product categories, you need a focussed approach. You need to get the traffic directly onto the offer as soon as possible, they don't need to see the store front.

You also need to make a serious review of your interface / navigation. I tried a few links and it was not helpful. I clicked the link sale and it just re loaded the default page again??

Every single image and link must have a clearly defined purpose. What is the goal of the link SALE ?? if ti has no purpose - get rid of it :)))

Just a few ideas. I hope some of these are helpful.

For one of my favourite examples of a really top class online Retail site see https://www.yves-rocher.co.uk/

Very clear messaging and plenty of nice offers.

Don't hesitate to get in touch if you like.

    Thank you,
