domain name extensions suggest about the type of org & its country of origin:

    .co.uk : from uk
    co.in : from india
    .co.us : from usa
    .org : organisation w/s
    .edu : educational institution website
    .gov : government website

domain names donot affect the search criteria from the users.
However, if a user in UK uses search of a phrase & clicks 'search pages from uk' in google & similar options in other search engines, then the extension filter comes into effect & all sites with .uk & relevant phrase gets listed first.

The domain name extention is only ONE of many factors that determine where a web page will rank in search results. Another factor that helps pages rank in local versions of search engines is the number of links from relevant local directories.

Overall, you should use the domain extention of the location where you do business. If you are global, try to get a .com name (not a .net or .biz or other).

Because URLs are inexpensive, if you're concerned, get both and redirect from one URL to the other.

Consider having your website(s) hosted by a UK server company (with an IP address inside the UK). That might also give you an additional edge.

I don't see a correlation between TLD and rankings (not factoring in regional issues).

Here is an interesting, though superficial test of this theory: https://www.thegooglecache.com/white-hat-seo/google-showing-bias-towards-or...

Here is another link which discusses my point:

I do not see that a .info or .net or other "business" TLDs would have impact in rankings. It is logical that .org, .gov, etc might impact rankings as these are traditionally more trusted sources.

As far as country TLDs go, this could have impact on rankings. If your target audience is in the UK then having a .co.uk TLD and native UK hosting then this could and should have impact on your regional rankings.
