Increasing Sales For An E-commerce Site

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I have recently inherited a yahoo retail site that has had very little advertising or marketing over the past three years. I am looking at using SEO services however I'm not sure that's the best way to go to increase sales. This is basicallya very simple specialty site that specializes in unique gifts such as jewlery boxes, etc... In the past when there was advertising for the site sales did increase but that was over 6 years ago and I'd like to know of SEO is the best way to go or if there are other marketing strategies that are not as costly. The budget I have a available is limited but I would like to get something going before valentines day. Any ideas, suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

A google adwords campaign might we successful. The key is to make sure that your key words are used in page titles and on the landing page (the page the ad takes you to). These can be done relatively cheaply. It is important that you learn some about this before jumping in. Google "google adwords" and you will find lots of information out there.

SEO is very important. This means that you edit your site in such a way that search engines are more likely to find it and list it. It is important that people can find your site when search for "jewellery boxes" or whatever else you are selling. Think about a regular store. If you had never seen of it, heard of it, or new it existed, would you shop there? Of course not, because you don't even know it exists. The same is true for web stores. The trick with search engines is if your products are very popular it will be hard to get listed on the first page as there are many more people trying to get listed there as well.

A site I have used before to get a quick idea of where to start for your particular site is www.websitegrader.com .

    I hope this helps.

I score of 60 means that 40% of the websites they have graded are graded higher than yours.

The 5.3% is your traffic rating from Alexa. This means that you have visitors, but does not mean that they are doing anything.

Your Google page rank is only 2, so that could be higher. Search "google page rank" and see how

I suggest doing the things that the website I provided earlier suggests.

You might want to re-write some of your product descriptions to pull on people's heart strings a little more. Right now, some of the are descriptive, but do not convince me that I need this (I was looking at the humidors)

Perhaps if you had some feature that allowed people to review the box. Many people find this useful on sites like Amazon. This may also give you more links and give people a reason to re-visit your site (to enter their review). The reviews may be the thing that pushes someone to a purchase.

I would let people know that the can view a larger image by clicking on the smaller images, this is not obvious and people may want to see your items in more detail. Some of the items may warrant mutliple angles to give people a good idea of the product.

    Hope this helps,

It would be very helpful if you could give us the link to the site so we can see your ecommerce offer :)

I run a lot of ecommerce campaigns currently mostly in Europe and I work with some big name retailers.

I think I could offer some insights but its hard without actually seeing what we are talking about.

You mention that it is a Yahoo? site

    It is owned bu Yahoo?

Google ad words can be good but I have found that Yahoo Overture brings less traffic but is actually more profitable if used correctly.

Email campaigns can be excellent if you tie up with the right lists.

SEO is very important to get the right traffic onto your site

Please provide a link so we can see your proposition. Feel free to contact me directly if you wish, I am always interested in new propositions. matthewanxa at gmail dot com
