Portfolio Show

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am a senior at The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago and am graduating this March. Right before graduation, I am required to make a comprehensive portfolio with all of the major marketing/advertsing projects and campaigns I have conducted. My major pieces include a new ad campaign for W Hotels, a 100 page business plan for a retail store I created called Mixology ( a liquor store like a Willams Sonoma) which includes direct marketing and advertising, a media kit for the release of the new Blackberry Bold which included three days of events, and a new advertising campaign for Absolute Vodka in Mexico.

The assignment for the show: I have to find 3 unique ways to brand myself with my logo and name that guests can take. I have some ideas in mind but would like suggestions.

Furthermore, employers, when you're looking at someone's portfolio what blows you away?

Thanks

    Drew,

The branding assignment really requires that you first develop a positioning statement that encapsulates what unique benefit you want to communicate and the precise target audience for your message.

What makes you different from, and better than, other designers? Why should someone hire you? Once you've defined that, the design challenge becomes much easier.

As for what blows me away when I'm looking at someone's portfolio, it's how well they understand MY specific needs, how relevant their experience is to MY situation, and how well they are able to connect with ME and what I'm trying to accomplish.

I have low patience with someone who has a one-size-fits-all presentation that they hope will somehow impress me. It's the homework they've done on MY brand and MY business needs that will stop me in my tracks. What they've done for someone else with a completely different problem is irrelevant (and boring) to me. I'm more interested in how the person thinks, how well he/she understands my problem, and how well they resonate with my situation.
