I would highly recommend Carl Mazer (create@carlmazer.com). He's a very creative designer (and one heck of a nice guy) who has worked for some of the best brand firms. One thing to consider is not to scrimp on the design of your logo. It will create the voice for your start-up and inform the design direction for your marketing collateral, web site, stationery, etc. It's worth the investment now, rather than having to make modifications when your business is more established (and there are more pieces of branded material to change).

All the best with your new venture and say hello to Carl for me.

    Paulus,

Ours was done by www.logoloft.com Flat rate $300. and finished in 2-3 days. Go to my site and take a look www.networkstrategy.com We were very pleased with the design and how quickly we had a logo. People think we are a big company but we are not.

    Some tips for the design.

Stay away from gradients, thin lines, dots, etc. Those don't reproduce well on a wide variety of media.

For example, a picture of the globe may look okay at 200px x 200px on the web, but shrink it down and print it on a business card. Then, try to cut it out in vinyl, or have it sandblasted on a glass door. Try to get it embroidered on a polo shirt. You see where I'm going with this?

How will the logo look in black and white? What about a 'reversed' logo where the white and black are flip flopped for use on a black or dark background?

Study the anatomy of combination marks. What is a logo? It is the type. What is a symbol? It is the object that accompanies the logo. What is a combination mark? It is the combination of the logo and the symbol.

Usually symbols relate to the company name or it's function. Sometimes, though, the symbol has no conceptual unity whatsoever with the company name or function. Those are things that you'll want to consider.

Depending on who you hire, you could get a myriad of questions, or very few. The more questions the designer asks, the better.

If you want to get the best design possible, do some research on yourself. Ask every question possible about yourself, the company, the location, the product, the service, the client, the _____, etc, etc, etc. This can help with development of the symbol, logotype, and color.

Finally, before you commit to a designer, make sure that you will receive multiple file formats. I would request a bare minimum of:

    .eps (illustrator 3) -vector=scalable
    .ai -vector=scalable
.jpeg (300 dpi at multiple sizes, RGB and CMYK)
    .bmp (for quickbooks)

You may want to consider purchasing Adobe Illustrator. With the vector files, you can save out any format that you will need, including all of the above and then some.

Any good designer will use pantone colors. Make sure yours does.

    Lastly, back up your files.
