Links

Posted by Anonymous on 50 Points
Hi All

Just out of curiosity what merits a good link?

What blogs and social media forums would we like to be linked to and what would we not want to link back to?

We done current have a blog of our own so use face book for a lot of this kind of thing.

Can we add any of these to face book or should we get to work on setting up our own blog to link them to??

If you're talking about one link then a good link would be:

    1. on a page/site that relates to your subject matter
    2. on a high PageRank page
    3. an editorial link (within the body content, no in footer, links page, sidebar, etc).
    4. without redirects
    5. without rel="nofollow"

There is more but you get the idea.

Linking back to a site/page that links to you will not reduce the value of that link unless you are doing so in bulk, as a link-building strategy (think reciprocal linking and links pages in bulk). Reciprocating a link here and there is natural and therefore is expected. Not linking out is unnatural.

In regards to social media, a lot of platforms rel="nofollow" links so the value is in leveraging your voice rather than PageRank. You can also generate direct traffic through profile views.

You should incorporate social media in your online marketing mix if it aligns with your product or service but I'd avoid using it exclusively (though I'm certain that there are some rare examples of organizations that do so).

The challenge with social media is quantifying the results.

RE: 2. on a high PageRank page

Neglected to mention that if all your links are high PR then you
likely have an unnatural link profile. So, when building links in bulk, you will likely wish to have a range of PR.

    Put yourself out there.

Make sure you have a profile set up on:

LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, Skype, You Tube
ActiveRain (realtors),Flickr, BlackPlanet, Ryze... link each community to your site.

OR a neat resource that combines all is:

Facebook and linkedin are pageranked high... so choose pages with a higher pagerank to link with. It will boost your pagerank.

A lot of social media sites rel="nofollow" their external links. Consequently, those links do not pass PR. The value in many of those sites is in direct traffic and brand awareness.

If your only goal is to boost PR (not the best strategy) then determine if the links do pass value .
