Crack Too Risky For Branding?

Posted by gcox on 250 Points
I make natural holistic dog treats, they do well. I am wanting to use the name doggie crack with a clever logo and funny dog. I think it is clever, my friends think it is very risky. What do the marketing profs think?

instead of showing clever logo and funny dog, y don't you go for something which shows dogs health and nutrition value or contents
dog treat is basically a dogs feed so show why the dog treat is necessary

    Dear Gcox,

This is going to sound harsh, but it's honest.

What you think of the name is irrelevant. You are not buying your product, your customers are.

Your friends are right. They know you and care about you. If you trust them, heed their advice. Why? Because your customers won't give their dogs crack any more than you'd buy a brand of coffee called Cocaine Sniff.

I know it sounds frightfully conservative, but err on the side of caution.

    I hope this helps.

Offensive is a better word than risky. Risky can be edgey-- that is a good thing. But you intend to take a natural, holistic product and name it after a drug? A drug who's tagline is "crack kills"?? I don't think you want your brand associated with something that kills.

Yeah that is why I was asking, I love it, but I have a very warped sense of humor too :)

I guess we will go with slobber knockers then :)

You all are correct, I just needed to hear it from the pros.

Cute or provocative names don't usually sell stuff as well as names that communicate an important and unique unmet need. Don't try to be too clever.
