Links

Need some help in understanding backlinks. I ran a report on my competitor to determine websites linking to them.

However, when I looked at the web sites I found no reference to them on the web site.

Could someone please explain how this could be.

Deindexation latency could be the cause.

For example, if the link is being shown on a blog main page, the link could be pushed off the page and into the blog archives. They would no longer reside on the page though it could take some time for Google to remove the reference from their index. The site could still potentially receive PR from the link even though the link no longer exists. My thinking is that the effect would be short-lived.

Additionally, though the links appear in a link search, the value of those links could possibly be null. They are showing up (for now) but aren't passing value.

Could also be hidden pages like email information or ones that are not linked through the menu or on any visible page.

"Could also be hidden pages like email information or ones that are not linked through the menu or on any visible page."

Orphan pages can and frequently do appear in SE indices and may be accessible as a result.
