Seo Tips/tricks

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hey all,

I am somewhat familiar with SEO but in the past have never put much into it. Well just within the past two months we have started a business from scratch and I really want to focus on online marketing. I will be doing a mix of paid and free stuff and really hoping that I can get us high in the rankings.

So what I am lookign help with is some direction. I am not necessary looking for specific things to do since I know SEO is an ever changing art. Instead I am looking for some general guides that can get me familiar and I can started learning more. If you know of any good websites, blogs, or books I would appreciate any suggestions. And yes I would love to hire someone to do this but since things are new the money just ain't there.

Thanks
Alex

    Dear Alex,

Check out James Schramko's blog, which you'll find here:

James is based in Sydney, Australia and he's a great bloke. He knows SEO inside out and upside down. If James can't help you, no one can. I hope this helps. Good luck to you.

Smart move Alex. I've been doing it for a long time and online marketing is where your highest ROI will always be. Here are a few suggestions.

    1) Start with Bill Hunt's SearchEngineWatch.com web site https://searchenginewatch.com/ Bill also has a great book on search engine marketing.

    2) Move beyond just SEO and PPC and embrace all that online has to offer. The best book by far on the subject is David Merman Scott's "The New Rules of Marketing and PR" It is a BusinessWeek best seller and should be at the top of the list for every marketer.

    3) Embrace social media. It is the very essence of the "free stuff" you are looking for and provides an opportunity for you to establish authentic connections with your customers and prospects.

If you want to dive deeper, feel free to contact me directly at thecynicalmarketer@gmail.com

    Best of luck, Johnny B.

    I like www.hubspot.com and www.seowhitehats.com

Both sites have excellent tips on article, video and general search engine marketing. I subscribe to SEO white hats via RSS and get useful tips all the time.

This WSJ article is also good. Plain english piece on how Google ranks sites:

    Hope it helps.

SEOmoz ( https://www.seomoz.org/ ) is one of my favorite sources of info.

Focus on your site and content first before moving on to other SEO strategies. Driving traffic to your site won't matter if it's a poorly designed site with little of value.

"I am not necessary looking for specific things to do... Instead I am looking for some general guides..."

Alex, the most important thing you can do is figure out what problems your potential website visitors are trying to solve, then how they will search for solutions to those problems, then build pages that help them solve those problems. This will direct you towards what keywords to optimize for and, if you do a good job solving the problems, also result in links to your pages.

    Echo scott.lindberg.

There's a universe of "tips and techniques" for better rankings and getting noticed by search engines, but you need to remember that:

-search engines don't buy from you - people do.
-search engines don't read your content - people do.
-search engines don't have problems - people do.
-search engines don't accurately gauge valuable content (yet) - people do.

Write for people, get the word out any way you can, and let SEO take care of itself.

    Alex,

I've been in SEO/SEM for years and there are 3 sites I have in my RSS feed that I check everyday.

    1. SEOMoz.com
The blog on this site has a wealth of information and there are several free tools available that are very helpful.

    2. SEOBook.com
Like SEOMoz, the blog on this site has a huge amount of information as well. This site also offer several free tools.

    3. GoogleWebasterCentral.blogspot.com
This is Google's blog... Follow what Google says and you'll be in a good position.

You will also want to take a peak at Google's guidelines for webmasters. They give a lot of good information on what is and isn't acceptable.

Of course there are many more information sources... But these are top on my list.

    Hope this help,
    Zack

It is certainly true that the site should be built for what users want, that is the first rule - relevant and unique content that answers a need.

However there are sometimes huge differences between search terms that can equally serve the user. For example I could use email management system: 79 searches / 23800 competing sites or I could use email management solution: 16 searches / 274000 competing sites. If these terms are interchangeable in my context it's obviously much better to use one that more people search for and that has less competition.

Putting in some keyword research at the beginning of the process of writing content can help you meet customers needs... by using the terms they search for you are giving them what they want.

I love Market Samurai as a keyword research tool. Google's free keyword research tool is a great place to start though!

James Schramko is good and there are another couple of Aussies who send out great free content: https://www.marketingassassins.com/about-us
    Happy Learning, it's interesting stuff!
