Cached Page With Old Name #1 In Organic Search

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Our previous domain name and company name show up as the #1 entry in organic search for our most important search term. The page is redirected to our current home page so traffic gets redirected. But we're not reaping any of the benefits of building name recognition and showing that we are industry leaders.

Is there anything I can do to change the old name to our current name for this entry?

Thanks.

The next time the web spiders visit your site, they'll update their rankings. Until then, you can't change their cached information. If you're already redirecting the traffic, there's nothing you can do but sit tight.

What type or redirect is it? Is it 301 or 302? 302 will cause issues. 301 will accomplish your objective but as Jay points out, it will take time for the search engines to sort out the change. Check your headers.

Keep in mind too that if the old site is still ranking well and you have a redirect in place, then you will still receive the traffic and PageRank (though perhaps not the toolbar PR for now).
