Are .co.cc Links Bad News?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I have a Google Alert set up for mentions of our store name online (something everyone should have!)

In the last week or so, I've found repeated mentions in .co.cc sites. The links that accompany the mention go to an error page HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden. I've learned that, if I understand correctly, these sites are supposedly created to allow a single site to appear on multiple domains.

I don't know whether these pages merely mention my store's name or have links as well.

The questions: Is this bad?
If it is bad, can I do anything about it?

Nothing you can do about it. It's easy to create a .co.cc domain for free, and no doubt some people are doing just that to build some SEO link juice.

    Others have reported similar problems:

Is there something I should be doing?

People can reference your site whenever they feel like it. There's nothing you can do to prevent them, nor is this a problem for you. At best, they'll generate backlinks to your website. At worst, their site will rank higher than yours for your store's name.

You could contact the site and request that the link be removed or corrected. A responsible site owner will honor your request though don't be surprised if your request is ignored in this case.

Search engines TEND to be less concerned about the sites that link to you than who you link to. Unless the sites are disreputable I wouldn't be too concerned.
