Seo Images: Brand + Product?

Posted by Anonymous on 25 Points
I want to SEO the images on my website so they are optimized for both the brand name, and the product. If I put both brand and the product in the alt tag or image name, for ex. alt="brand widget xxx", would that optimize for both keywords? say if someone searches for "brand" or "widget", ideally, my images will show up?

I see a lot of our competitors do not have their brand name in the alt tag of their images, just the product. Does it hurt one keyword or the other if I put brand and product together?

Thanks

No and it provides value to the person searching for the specific product so it is beneficial from both perspectives. Keyword prominence can be a factor in a number of on-page elements (e.g. title tag) though again, it does provide value to the person performing the query. It certainly would be interesting to test this on a limited number of product pages to see what the results are. Then roll it out across the other products.

We have a client that receives ~40% of their traffic through image search alone. Granted the conversion rate is lower but it is still a large volume of traffic they would have missed.

Also, try mixing up the at text. The challenge with ecomemrce is that typically there are a large number of optimized elements that are nearly identical. So rather than having 100 alt attributes formatted as such: "Brand Name Product name" try:

    Brand Name Product Name
    Brand Name SKU Product Name
SKU Product Name by Brand Name
Product Name SKU by Brand Name
Product Name Size SKU by Brand Name
    etc.
