It's a good but very broad question. You first need to understand what it is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization

From there you can continue to look at other online sources for more info.

SEO is good and well in bringing traffic to your website but if your website does not appeal to the visitor, or if he does not find "what's in it for him" to hang about and discover what you do or sell, then you've just wasted your time in doing SEO. What good is SEO if your website is not optimized to convert visitors who arrive at your website?

Most people always think "Oh if I have SEO, I have traffic. When I have traffic, I have sales." Not necessarily. Traffic which does not convert does not make money for you.

So what can you do? Go and take a hard look at your website. Ask "why would a customer choose to buy from me instead of my competitors?" What makes your website so enticing, so imperative to buy from? Work on that first and then if your website is built well, it should be SEO-friendly and you don't need to actually work on SEO per se.

"Work on that first and then if your website is built well, it should be SEO-friendly and you don't need to actually work on SEO per se."

It's very easy (and self-serving) for a designer to say design is where the budget should go or a SEO to say that SEO is where it's "at" but in reality, a balance of content, SEO, social media, design, usability, etc are what it takes.

It takes a lot of work on a lot of fronts to make a website successful. Unfortunately SEO is about labor and wishing it to happen will not make it happen. While usability and design are important, what good is a perfect site that no one sees?

    SEO - Steps to follow

    1. Choose 3-4 relevant keywords and key phrases. Don't go for generic keywords. Instead, try to find out niche markets and use more targeted keywords.

    2. Based on you key phrase selected, get your pages search engine optimized. This includes CSS based layouts, keyword density, title tags, semantic HTML tags.

    3. Create good content for your website and mix your key phrases into your website's content.

    4. Try to keep your content updated on regular basis. That is add new content as and when possible.

    5. Get your website linked to. The more inbound links to your website, the better.

    6. Submit your website to Dmoz though they don't seem to accepting new entries nowadays.

    7. Submit your website to directories. But don't go overboard on this. Pay only if your link will be on PR1 and above page. Never use reciprocal links from directories. Try to locate local and regional directories.
