Migrating To Joomla Cms: Do''s & Don''ts

Posted by Anonymous on 40 Points
Hi girls and guys,

I always get great advice from marketing pros here and you are the caffeine that powers our e-marketing campaigns. I want to get your opinion on what to look out for in relation to migrating to a joomla cms. How do I preserve our SERPS if we are already ranking? Canonicalization issues? Cons of migrating to the joomla cms. Our website is www.aretedi.com and I wanted a cms solution to solve our content issues or lack of content in this case. :)

First of all the URL situation is a mess. You're left to 3rd party modules to generate decent URLs and none of the ones I've worked with (most) work very well.

Meta data is achievable. The core application is stable but I find it to be less flexible than other CMSs.

If your needs are simple, Wordpress is great as a CMS. If they are complex, Drupal is excellent (my two favorite tools). Both are easy to SEO.

You seem to have only a few pages on the site (7 or 8?). What requirements do you have for the CMS and what plans do you have for the site? I think when you've defined this you'll have an easier time making a choice on technology.

Disclosure: We are a search consultancy and we develop in Drupal/Ubercart.

If you change your URLs during the switchover, make sure that you implement permanent redirects from the old URLs to the new.

    Hey buddy,

I like Joomla because i found Drupal's learning curve imposing. Wordpress doesnt offer the modules I wanted to incorporate. BTW I just got my first .gov backlink indexed today and am a happy camper. Since you mentioned it wordpress might be a good alternative. I always hold your advice in high regard and will do my research before I choose. I'll check ack in a couple of days .

Based on the quick look that I took of your site, Drupal may not be my top recommendation. We almost exclusively develop in it and it is MY favorite CMS (that's why we use it) but Wordpress has a boatload, I repeat, boatload of contributed plugins that will extend it in myriad ways. I'm a big fan of WP for blogs and simple sites. It is an excellent choice for many applications.

What features of Joomla do you require? Perhaps I or someone in the forum could point you to some WP plugins that would do the trick.
