Ben Franklin said "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten." I had a client selling a competing product in a strip mall with a big box store-- made that into signage on the front door.

The answer is it depends. The more I understand about the product or service being purchased, the greater the chance that I will buy upwards on the quality scale.

As a student of Targeting, I believe we need to match our products to the people who understand and appreciate our quality.

Are you asking specifically about how marketers behave as customers, or is this a generic customer you're asking about?

If the latter, the answer is probably that different customers in different situations behave and respond differently.

What is the reason for the question? What industry? What country/continent?

If I've never used a product/service before I don't look at price. If I have, I know what I need and I only look at price.

It is a combo at times. I can buy a $15 shirt at Walmart and buy low quality. Or, I can go to TJMaxx, and spend the same $15 but get a name brand selling at a department store for $50. Savvy shoppers can get both price and quality.

The reason for the question is because we are trying to gain the mass appeal by feauturing low price goods. We are trying to get the best quality we can get for a budget. But for a budget, the quality will be just as it costs.
