Google Scaling Back Algorithm For Social Media?

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
I've heard that Google is scaling back its algorithm for social media, so not as many of such posts will appear on SERPs. I can't imagine this applies to blog postings, but perhaps to facebook or twitter postings? If I misunderstood or heard it wrong, or if this is just an urban legend, please set me straight.

    Dear Ruth,

The rumours surrounding what Google will or will not do at any point in time are just that: rumours. Google's secrecy on its algorithms is tight. However, here's an article that outlines what's what in plain English.

    I hope this helps.

hmmm....it's hard to prove a negative, but I haven't found any evidence of that to date. In fact, Google just upped the importance of social shopping and "checking in" (gowalla and foursquare).

I don't agree either. Backlinks are what made Google so different from other search engines. I see that the social graph represents current day "backlinks" (not discounting the value of backlinks - they're a huge ranking signal).

I believe that social activity does provide a ranking signal (at least to the extent of determining popularity/buzz) and it can be useful to help get pages indexed.

Perhaps what the person said is that G is scaling back the live social media results within the search engine results pages. That I might buy into.

I have also been picking up on some buzz that Google is working to reduce the value of backlinks coming from signature links in forums and blog responses (i.e. trying to differentiate between someone recommending a site to others and someone making posts all over the place for the purpose of building do-follow signature links). Maybe what you have heard is some variation of that rumor. However, I have not heard the exact rumor you are questioning before either.
