Client Wants To Buy Keyword Links In My Content

Posted by hs330 on 250 Points
I'm with a b2b publishing company. We have websites with rich content - niche news and feature articles updated regularly - and our traffic beats our competitors'.

Here's my issue: An advertiser would like to purchase keywords within our articles and have them link to their website. Has anyone had experience with this before?

I need info on pricing, how to measure success, good sources to help determine relevant keywords, and to know if this is a common practice/is there a product/service I can use to help execute the campaign.

Client is looking to be wowed and hasn't given us much to go on. Any suggestions on executing this would be much appreciated.

Gut reaction: I'd be concerned that having commercial links in otherwise-high-quality content will cheapen the perceived value of your product.

How about a sidebar that contains the links from each paragraph of the news/feature articles? I can understand why the client wants the embedded links approach, but it may slowly starve the golden goose. Then you'll both be sorry.

How long will these links last? Could you perhaps sell the keywords to the "highest bidder" for a period of time? That'll increase your revenue, and give you flexibility should you decide to discontinue the practice.
