Social Media To Promote Equality And Diversity?

Posted by rum68br on 700 Points
Hello all. Not really sure if this belongs in here, so apologies if it doesn't.

I was asked a question today which had me speechless. The question was how can you promote equality and diversity when communicating with your customers via social media. Can anyone help me with the answer or point me in the direction on how I could find out.

Thank you kindly

For a moment, ignore the tool (social media). Focus on the message itself. How can you promote equality and diversity in all your conversations (not just externally)(and not just "talk the talk" but also "walk the walk")? And then from the perspective of your customer, why should they care about this message from you? Once you deeply understand the answers to these two questions, then you have the seeds for sowing in all your communication, and for instilling it in your social media channel(s) as well.

Ethics, actions, content, consistency of material, compelling dialogue ... each of these points when followed up with relevant, salient material will offer all the proof you need.

Forget the notion of "promoting" anything: that's not what social media is for. Build roads, don't tell people where to go.

What equality are we looking for? The equality between bosses and union leaders perhaps? The equality between cats and dogs? How can you then promote this alongside the diversity of people from floor-sweepers to software engineers working in the same company? Or the diversity of the mammals across North America?

So let's take an example. The boss of my local supermarket is often found stacking shelves, helping customers and working the tills. His junior staff members usually only do one of these things according to their training and abilities. The boss is demonstrating equality*, the his store demonstrates diversity.

*Actually, he's not. He's only doing his job. If a till needs manning, and he's free he mans it. The point is that he's not standing on his high horse and shouting when things need doing.

As to social media, you can do a lot with it. Yet a local cafe has regular gatherings of their twitter followers, it's not as social as one might wish for. Yet there would be no gathering but for their twitter campaign ;-) They've built their business on social media!

I think Jay is on the right track and asking the right questions. Promoting equality and diversity is the goal. How did you do that before social media? After all, social media are media. How do you promote equality and diversity using, say, the radio, or direct mail, or any other medium?
