What is your goal for the launch - distribution or advertising? Are you printing magazine or is this an online-only offering? Would your readers care if you suddenly stopped publishing?

Hi Jay, It is a printed magazine and is the most popular on our island. The reason I did stop for a while was because our Island was confronting economy problems and our government was very unstable, that made a huge change in the selling of advertisements. But because we never had problems selling the magazine, we reconsider to publish again. This time was very easy to sell advertisements but sell didn’t search the target. But I think we have to do more promotions to boost the selling of advertisement. That is why I was thinking in some crazy ideas ta boost the magazine not only for the buyers but also for the advertisers.

There is a very real danger with brainstorming. You get all sorts of stupid answers none of which is any good. The point I'm trying to make here is to find a focus point. One single item that defines your magazine as it stands on the shelves and stands before all the others as unique and special.

Take that, and you'll have few problems with great ideas for promotions.

I can help you find that - only you'll need to answer searing questions that you may find unsettling. I know because others have found them truly upsetting. Nevertheless, that makes my questions no less valid and no less pertinent. Avoiding them is only to avoid the very problems your commercial enterprise will face when it hits the market. Facing them head on, now, will help you face real problems after your launch.

In short: What makes it special against all others on the shelf?

This will do well enough to give us a sniff of where we should direct our multifaceted imaginations. Answer this and I guarantee you'll get some fantastic ideas.

My apologies, the slow posting system on MP means I missed your answer to Mr. Hamilton-Roth.

What makes us unique is that the magazine is in our native language, we have most of the time the “celebrities” in the magazine. We are colorful and we are the best in 2.

I am presuming that there are few others in your native tongue that people can relax to.

Not knowing this, what special things do you do in your culture that another magazine wouldn't think of?

Could you encourage a local (native speaking) celebrity to come and help? When you say you're the best in 2, is the other magazine also in the local language and I'm presuming you're top. Have they done anything in the last ten years that you shouldn't do (but could give us a few ideas?)

Are you in Curacao? From your profile details it seems so - is the magazine readership exclusively in Curacao or elsewhere? I also live in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

At this moment there is one other magazine in English and ours in native language, we have 6 years running the magazine and the have 2 years. They are not active the just but one in 3 months a magazine in the market. We can always ask for help of the celebrities.

    @ Moriarty,
Yes we are from Curacao. Cool…

What about Koning Willem Alexander - and of course Koningin Maxima ;-) My guess is she's as popular there as here.

Your language of publication in Papiamentu or Nederlands? What's the name, I'll look it up when I'm in Utrecht tomorrow !!

Thanks for your cheery email, by the way. It's always nice to speak to folk off-forum.

It's very late here now, so enjoy the summer heat and I'll be back in the morning with some more ideas. Only I do need some specifics from you about what makes your magazine not just special - but something that people will still read when it's been on the kitchen table for three months ;-)

As I said it's in papiamentu. Thank you Jay and Moriarty...

Actually you said it was "in the local language" ... which could have been understood to be Dutch.

In the meantime - how about a "Curacao liqueur" edition that's blue :-)

Hi Guys, I just need some unique idea's for a magazine Launch.

You could have a fun run where everyone has to wear something made from your magazine

You could make boats from pages and float them in the harbour

Paper aircraft distance/endurance competition. I need not tell you where they'll get the paper.

    Kites, likewise

You could make movable palm trees from your magazines for people to sit under - and of course they can read the bark.

Do these spark any ideas for you? Do you like any of the directions - or if not, why not; knowing what you don't like is as important as knowing what you do like.

Those are cool ideas, I was also thinking some discount card or goody bags when they leave.
