Ideas For A Facebook Photo Activity/competition

Posted by warwick on 125 Points
My client recently went on an overseas holiday. They took as a mascot a woollen beanie that was branded with their logo, and photographed it (i.e. just the beanie, no one wearing it) near various well known landmarks. They called the beanie GABE.
We thought we could turn it into a fun and engaging activity for their Facebook page - The Adventures of GABE - but am looking for creative ideas on how it would work. Maybe turn it into some sort of competition?
Something that has already been tried and worked elsewhere.
Some details for info: Client is a handyman franchise system with national coverage in Australia. Likes are 70% women, house-holders aged mostly 30+. Facebook is new to the client, but we already have 360+ Likes.
I would appreciate any input.
Thank you in advance

As a contest: "Where In The World Is Gabe?" Have people guess where the image was taken. All correct guesses are entered for a chance to win a prize (for example). Or, show the images as an example, and have people upload their own photos of GABE, and offer a contest for: most remote, highest, lowest, funniest, etc.

If you're a handyman franchise, you need to connect your competition to the sorts of things people need or want from handymen. That would strengthen your branding after all.

You could have your beanie with a hammer and the basin from a bathroom and ask for comments ... or such unlikely (or amusing) juxtapositions. Whilst this does nothing with the holiday snaps, it does tie in with what the business is all about.

Not sure how the woolen beanie looks like but if the beanie is more cartoonish looking completed with company's mascot, we can do some fun things as an engagement activity. Set up a facebook page titled, 'Suggest an adventure for GABE'. On the page, talk about the recent adventure of GABE in a story telling way.

For e.g., you can start with a small story titled, 'Adventures of GABE' that can then be built into a competition. So the story goes like this......GABE the adventure loving woolen beanie just came back from his vacation. Look over to see the fun and adventure GABE had on this trip. This time he was all alone (since you mentioned that the woollen beanie was photographed alone and not with someone wearing it). So, thrilled he is with the experiences and learnings he gained that he now wants to plan for fun trips. This time he doesn't want to go alone on trips, he wants to go with friends. But GABE has one peculiar habit, he likes to adorn new avatars for his trip. He is confused as to what avatar he should adorn and do on his next trip. Can you suggest him some ideas?

Next to the story create a photo wall section showing PHOTOS of his recent trip,

Now request readers to suggest ideas: You can begin by saying that the readers have to imagine that they are a friend of GABE. There task is to think of an avatar for GABE and his friend, design the avatar (handmade/sketched/photographed/or graphically made), add a caption and upload on the photo wall (gallery designed for the contest). [Not entertained] Please keep them clean—we will delete avatars that spoil our fun.
You can run the competition in two phases, where in the 1st phase, readers make avatars and puts them up on display wall. In the 2nd phase, have readers vote for their favorite avatar. Announce the results based on the voting pattern. You can continue the story thread by asking readers to suggest an adventure trip for GABE.... and so on.

    Regards

So whilst it wasn't what you were looking for, can you share with us WHY it wasn't what you were looking for? Because without that we're not going to know what it was that we did wrong in the first place, and it leaves us as blind as before.

Could you give us an idea why you chose a woolen beanie as your mascot for example - that would help us a lot in knowing how you connect with your audience through him. It would also inspire us to better ideas.
