How Do I Justify The Cost Of A New Web Site?

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
I am consulting with a manufacturing client who spends almost nothing on marketing, and it shows. They need a new web site and App. I am looking at a 6 figure price tab and need to know some ways to justify it.
I think I can tie in CRM and order management systems, thereby reducing the need for new headcount. But, what other arguments are out there?

Best would be to show added sales, or that the new site would save them money (or time, which is also money). most people understand that these will happen, so a specific number may not be needed. But if these folks traditionally under-spend on marketing, they may not.

Cutting the headcount by 1 or 2 by itself may be able to justify a 6 figure expense.

Are you sure you want to have your fingerprints on a six-figure website that may not, in the end, be able to demonstrate that it generated enough incremental profit to pay for itself?

Rather than trying to justify the price tag in the absolute, maybe offer some less costly alternatives and explain what the client gets for the additional cost. That way they can make the decision on their own.

How did they get from where they are today to your proposal? What drove those decisions?
How can you justify the price tag? How much of this can be grown over time, thereby justifying each phase of development?
Have you done any surveys showing that their existing system is costing them opportunities?
How much additional training will their staff require to use the newer system?
