Challenges Of Setting Up An Online Magazine

Posted by ogbonnayaigbokwe on 250 Points
I am a co-founder of an online magazine created to tell positive African stories and showcase african talents to the world. We just started this year 2017. Our desire is to be the #1 in our business so we are really not sure of how to measure followership on our magazine site. I am aware that in the long run, content and followership are what will enable us to retain and sustain our market share. How do we determine the age categorisations of visitors to our site? How do we measure the number of visitors overseas? How do we promote the site globally? These are questions seriously agitating our minds. We really want to be very professional in this business. Our magazine is JuvitAfrica.

I know a person who specializes in measuring and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) and identifying the metrics that really matter. If you will contact me privately (using the email address in my profile) I will be glad to put you in touch with her.

A first start would be to get up and running with Google Analytics (https://analytics.google.com) or similar. Using their tools, you can get all of the information which is available about the web site visitors. This includes information such as where the visitors come from. Lots of other info you guys can look through.

Some of what you are asking (age categories, etc.) would not be available there, so you would need to get from other sources, such as surveying visitors. But I would start by getting what you can from the Analytics, as that info is free (except for time to set it up and digest it).

Promoting the site is a whole different issue and we'd need more info before giving suggestions on that.

Another vote here for Google Analytics (https://analytics.google.com).

Next, you need to do something about your social media credibility issue: you've been on Twitter for five and half years and you only have 7 followers? Really?

You'd do well to avoid posting duplicate content on your social media streams as well.

To reach a wider community, consider pay per click advertising.

#1 forget global until you can handle Africa or even a small region of same. You can't conquer the world until you conquer what you know

#2 know the difference between a like and a share...life means nothing, a share means you are developing an audience thus a following thus word of mouth

#3 the gents above are absolutely correct on what you need to do; find your local audience first; know them and their needs/wants next; serve the need/want
