Are Facebook Contests Still Effective/relevant?

Posted by k.pohlman on 250 Points
Over the last few months our engagement on Facebook has declined although we continue to receive new likes. It's the best platform for our demographic at this point. There was internal interest in holding a contest to revive engagement.

Are they effective? Also, is there a lot of red tape as far as legal issues to address?

My take (as someone who is not a big fan of contests, so haven't used much) is that contests can do a bit to get people to Like your site, but beyond the short term engagement of them clicking that like, won't do as much to get people to long term engage in your site.

Facebook limits who sees content now. Just because someone likes your page and has it set that they want to see your content doesn't mean they will. There are 2 ways to improve this:

    1) to have compelling content that gets people to react to or share your content. The more a content creates engagement, the more Facebook allows others to see it. To help this, make sure you like or share the business posts on your personal account.

    2) to bite the bullet and pay Facebook for the engagement through "boosting" the post or promoting the post.

Why not conduct a FB poll to gauge interest? That'll give you a reason to engage your existing fans.

    Yes, contests still work.

How will you measure the increased engagement? You're already getting new Likes. What is it that you want to increase? What will that do for your business?

I think posts that beg for the old "Like and Share" are seeing less light of day on Facebook lately, including contests with that goal. Contests among your followers can move them along the path to buying from you. You can also sponsor contests with your partners do mine Likes from each other's followers.

If you can reach your audience with a contest, can you reach them with better quality engaging content instead?

A Big Yes. Facebook Contests are effective and relevant, but for some type of niche. Every feature of the website like this serves some purpose. We just need to hit the bull's eye.
