Looks like some great advice above. I'd also consider a program to contact some of your customers, to find out their perspectives on your company. They may give you some insights on your competitive position, they may give you good quotes and perspectives for your marketing pieces, they may suggest enhancements to your products and services, and in the process you may stumble on a lead or two for repeat business, which will help build your relationship with Sales.

Let me add in what is already great ideas. I would first come up with an ideal marketing department probably based on all the ideas you have so far from this forum. I would then check on what is happening now whether in the name of marketing or other. I establish the gap, missing links and other deficiencies.

See what resources you have now compared to what you would need for your ideal department. How muc does the management palnning to give you ? Can you ask for more?

Then I would see if I can have the ideal department. If not where can I start and work towards the ideal department.

But whatever you do have a marketing plan even if in the simplest one page form answering the following questions?
1.What is the goal of marketing in the firm?
    2. How do you achieve those goals?
    3. What are your target markets?
    4. Do you have a high value niche? Define it.
    5. What weapons are you going to deploy?
    6. What budget do you have?

    Regards,
