Point Distribution

Posted by Anonymous on 100 Points
Hi

I have a suggestion for awarding points to experts.

Many times I find myself appreciating all the answers that I am getting but I feel like some have been much better than others or more to the point.

My suggestion is to have the ability to give points out of a 100%. For example if you decide to give 100 points 60% will go to the answer that was the most accurate and the rest distributed between all the others not necessarily equally.

It would probably require adding another option near each answer

I think that distributing the points equally is not really reflective of the efforts or the ideas.
I would appreciate comments.
Michal

    I agree!
My first question had some great responses, some better than others and few that I wanted to award for just for taking the time out to respond, but didnt because I knew it would further distribute the points and give less credit to those that made more of an impact.

    My thoughts exactly Michal.

We have been talking about this in the KHE insiders forum, if i remember correctly it is on the LONG list of things to do.

If you really want to push this, then contact the moderator by clicking on "moderator help" and selecting "suggest a new feature".

    hope this helps

I agree with kwinters, many "Answerers" may not have the experience or knowledge base to compose as good an answer as the more experience ones, but that doesn't mean they don't put as much if not more time into it.

Also, some people just have a hard time putting thoughts into words in a concise manner, but they are well-intentioned.

"Askers" should just be happy they received any information for free and not get hung up on the point distribution, that is just adding extra friction and would lead to even further discussions about what is a good, better and best answer.

If we as expert "Answerers" were getting monetarily compensated it might make more sense, but as it is I don't think most "Answerers" are too concerned about the fact that they should have been allocated more points because their answer was "better"

I know it has never really occured to me because really aren't we doing this just to share our knowledge and help each other out?

    Just my thoughts......

I'd leave things alone. There are more important projects in the queue, and the points are not what motivates most of the "experts."

Besides, it doesn't take long to get to know the personalities here ... whether they are in the top 25 (in expert points) or not. And the networking benefits are based on what people see/infer from the answers than from the absolute number of expert points.

By the way, if you answer enough questions with good answers (insightful, relevant, helpful, etc.), you'll get the points eventually. If you look at the "batting average" of the top experts, you'll see that they have a high percentage of accepted answers. That's because they consistently give good answers. It's not a random thing.

    Hi michaeldover,

You state that the reason you are a participant is to enhance your professional exposure and opportunities.

The best way you can do this is to complete your profile and let the world know something about you.

Look at all the top-ranked experts. Long ago we all opened the kimono on "who we are".

As a result, if you Google any of us, we will be right at the top.

Think about how that has enhanced the opportunities that have presented themselves to us, and how cool it is to tell a prospect to "Google me" knowing you will be on top!

Plus, where will it link to? Right to your KHE profile and answers!

Points, shmoints, sharing the knowledge and helping colleagues and others out, that is what it is all about, right?

    hi Michal

i agree with Pepper and Micheal on keeping it as it is. it is user friendly and is rewarding to participants. the purpose is to encourage responses.

and yes, rather, people should be encouraged to fill up the profile page. unfortunately, almost 90% members of this forum dont fill up their profile, especially new members and students.

    cheers!!

One further thought. As I look through answers that have been accepted (and those that have not been accepted), the better/more helpful answers are almost always selected more frequently.

I suspect that the expert point ranking wouldn't be much different than it is now if there were a way to split the points other than equally. On any one question, there would be a difference, but overall -- and over time -- the two different approaches would probably be very similar.

Good/helpful responses tend to be accepted more, and people who give those responses accumulate more expert points. The only thing that might change if there were a way to assign points on a different basis is that the distance between the top experts and the rest of the cast would be greater.

Leave it alone. If you want more expert points, respond to more questions with good/helpful advice.

I agree that people with not a good answer must get less points than the ones with a perfect answer. may be with green marked - 60% allocation and red marked 40% allocation. thus if there is a question with 100 pts and i mark with green 2 answers, these 2 persons must get 30 pts each and the rest to split the 40%.
