What grade do chief executive officers give chief marketing officers? Do CEOs think CMOs are bold or bureaucratic? Are CMOs in the top tier of colleagues whom CEOs trust?

To find out, Boathouse conducted a survey in September and October 2023 among 150 CEOs at US companies that have 100+ employees.

Some 26% of CEOs give their firm's CMO's performance an A grade, 47% a B grade, 25% a C grade, 2% a D grade, and 1% a failing grade.

Some 73% of CEOs say CMOs tend to be bold and push the organization, whereas 27% say CMOs tend to be bureaucratic.

Some 45% of CEOs say their firm's CMO is in the top tier of organization leaders they trust.

Some 60% of CEOs say their firm's CMO understands the business and 58% say their firm's CMO is performance-minded.

However, only 10% of CEOs say their CMO would put the CEO's needs above the CMO's own needs.

About the research: The report was based on data from a survey conducted in September and October 2023 among 150 CEOs at US companies that have 100+ employees.
